Traveling by road in Chad can be fun, annoying, impressive and dangerous. The roads are in severe neglect and most are dirt trails. Dry riverbeds (wadis) on routes make for difficult sandy terrain in the dry season and fill up for hours at a time during the rainy season. The average Chadian who decides to make use of 'public transport' will typically find themselves in a vintage Toyota pick-up or large World War II era commercial truck, riding unsecured in the cargo area. Transforming any incidents from being inconvenient ro being fatal. I used to fantasize about touring Chad on the back of one of these trucks all the time...
